Grounding Basics

Grounding — also called Earthing — means putting your body in direct contact with the natural field of electrical energy that sits on the surface of the planet.

You can reach it by walking barefoot outdoors, or by using the "barefoot substitutes" we explain across this site. These original GroundingWell products draw on the ground port of a household outlet, or on a simple ground rod kit, to link you to the Earth's energy. Because they are built with conductive materials, they carry that energy into your body whenever your skin is touching them.

Both words describe reconnecting with the subtle, natural energy of the Earth, and in everyday use they mean the same thing.

Some people do draw a line between them. For those readers, "Earthing" means putting the body in direct skin contact with the ground — walking barefoot on soil, for instance — while "Grounding" refers to wiring electrical equipment to the Earth so that shocks and hazards are avoided, which is a completely different use of the word. That distinction matters to an electrician or an engineer; for everyone else the two terms are interchangeable when we are talking about connecting to the Earth's surface for health and wellbeing.

Getting back to the Earth's energy can be as easy as stepping outside barefoot onto grass, sand or concrete.

The other route is to use the original, time-tested, durable and safe GroundingWell products — the "barefoot substitutes". You will find more about them throughout our site.

The technology inside GroundingWell products is straightforward. Every product is built from a conductive material — the sleep systems, for example, carry silver threading throughout the fabric. That conductive material moves the Earth's energy to you through a ground cord, which plugs either into the ground port of an electrical outlet or into the optional GroundingWell Ground Rod. The products are durable, safe and offered across a wide range of affordable prices, and we are here to help you find the GroundingWell system that suits your lifestyle best.

Pets can gain as much from grounding as people do, particularly when they live mostly indoors and rarely get the chance to pick up the Earth's electrons the way animals in the wild do.

The advantages are much the same as they are for humans. Put an Earthing sheet on your bed and you will often see a pet head straight for it.

Grounding may help lower inflammation, support circulation and encourage collagen production, among other effects — and those benefits carry over to the health of indoor animals. It may also take the edge off stress and anxiety in pets kept inside.

Plenty of customers tell us their animals are drawn to grounded bedsheets and other products on their own. They seem to recognise something good and familiar even though they cannot say so; their behaviour speaks for the benefit they feel.

No study has looked specifically at grounding and neuropathy, but there are solid reasons to think it may help with the condition:

1. It is proven to stimulate blood flow.
Neuropathy — diabetic neuropathy above all — comes from damage to the capillaries and blood vessels feeding the nerves in the extremities (hands and feet). Better circulation means more blood reaching those areas, which supports the healing and regeneration of the nerves there.

2. It reduces inflammation. Nerve damage from inflammation is another driver of neuropathy. The electrons taken up during grounding may neutralize positively charged free radicals in the body, and those free radicals are known to feed inflammation. Cutting them back could ease inflammatory conditions, including the inflammation so often tied to neuropathy.

3. Pain Relief: Several studies point to grounding easing chronic pain. Since neuropathy usually involves nerve pain, grounding may bring relief by changing the electrical activity of the nervous system or simply by lowering inflammation.

4. Stress Reduction: Grounding is widely reported to have a calming effect, which matters because stress can make neuropathy symptoms worse. By easing stress and encouraging relaxation, grounding may help indirectly.

5. Sleep Improvement: Better sleep is another benefit people describe. Good sleep is essential for healing and pain management, so it can indirectly support the management of neuropathy symptoms.

Worth reading on this subject is the account of Dr. David Richards, a GP who treated 21 neuropathy patients with grounding mats.

General Product Questions

To check that your GroundingWell™ product is doing its job you will need a multimeter or voltmeter, available from any hardware store.

The device reads your body voltage. When the grounding product is working, that reading drops as soon as you rest any part of your body on the mat or sheet.

Here is a video tutorial on how to test your GroundingWell products (Click this Link)

No. Grounding products give off no EMF radiation and no magnetic or electric fields, because they never carry live electricity — they only connect to the earth.

There is a video test of the grounding bed sheet showing that it emits no wifi, no EMF signal and no electromagnetic field.

That is almost always the multimeter, not the cord. Every one of our grounding cords carries a built-in 50,000 Ohm resistor — a safety feature that stops any unexpected current reaching the grounding product while still letting your excess body voltage drain away into the ground.

Most multimeters include a continuity test, a quick way of seeing whether a circuit is open or closed. That test normally works from a threshold resistance value (often around a few hundred ohms), so it is not suited to reading high resistances accurately — such as the 50,000 Ohm value of our cord.

Yes. Our grounding products work perfectly well in high-rise apartments. Whatever floor you live on, the grounding socket stays properly grounded.

Use our grounding rod instead. Push it into the earth, run the 40 foot cord indoors and plug it into your GroundingWell product.

There is no evidence of grounding interfering with pacemakers or metal implants. Using our products is no different from walking barefoot or lying on the ground outdoors, and as far as we know nobody with a pacemaker or an implant has ever been told not to walk barefoot outside.

Grounding does have a beneficial anticoagulant (blood thinning) effect, which lowers the risk of clots and improves circulation. That effect may add to anticoagulant or blood thinning medication, so we recommend speaking with your doctor before using grounding products alongside them.

Here is a study showing how grounding improves blood circulation.

Feel free to take it to your doctor and ask whether indoor grounding is right for you:

Many of our customers use grounding products together with pacemakers and metal implants without any trouble. If you are at all unsure, check with your doctor before you begin indoor grounding.

It depends on the country you live in:

Canada and the United States:
Choose the "USA Plug" option. No adaptor is included, because our grounding wire is built to go straight into the bottom hole of your socket — the grounding socket — with no adaptor needed.

United Kingdom:
Choose the "UK Plug" option.

Germany, France, and other EU countries:
Choose the "EU Plug" option

Australia and New Zealand:
Choose the "AU/ NZ Plug" option

Singapore:
Singapore runs on the "UK Plug", so pick that option

Malaysia:
Malaysia normally uses the "UK Plug"

Indonesia:
Indonesia has two plug types, C and F. Type F is the same as the "EU Plug".

*Please note that we cannot support Type C sockets, as they are not grounded.

Both connect your body to the Earth's electrical charge. Sheets suit sleeping, while mats are the more flexible choice for use at a desk, on the floor or on the bed.

GroundingWell™ Sheet Product Questions

Make sure the cord is firmly connected to a properly grounded outlet. With the outlet grounded and your skin against the sheet, the conductive fibres let the grounding connection do its work.

Setting up a GroundingWell™ grounding sheet takes a moment. Lay the sheet on your bed as you would any fitted or flat sheet, clip the grounding cord that comes with it into the sheet's connector, then plug the other end into the grounding port of a wall outlet. From there, direct skin contact with the sheet is all that is needed for the grounding effect.

The conductive side faces upward. That is the side holding the conductive materials — usually silver threads — that carry the Earth's energy to your body. Sleeping straight on that surface, or with a thin cotton sheet over it, keeps conductivity where it should be.

A grounding sheet cannot deliver an electric shock, because it connects only to the grounding port and never to electrical current. A faint static sensation can appear if the outlet is not properly grounded or if static has built up in the room; checking the outlet and the setup normally clears it up.

A grounding sheet needs conductive material to make an electrical connection with the Earth. GroundingWell™ sheets are woven from 95% organic cotton and 5% conductive silver, which gives a comfortable, breathable surface that grounds you once it is plugged into a grounded outlet and touched by bare skin.

There is no fixed limit. Most people simply use theirs all night while they sleep, since longer contact means more exposure to the grounding connection. Consistent overnight use is what is usually suggested for the best results.

Some people notice relaxation or better sleep within the first few nights. Even so, most grounding guides advise using the sheet steadily for several weeks before judging any change in sleep quality or overall comfort.

GroundingWell™ Mat Product Questions

Keep the mat out of direct sunlight so the PU leather lasts longer.

To clean it, wipe the surface down with mild soap, detergent or cleaning wipes, then rinse with water and dry it off with a cloth or paper towel.

Looked after properly, the GroundingWell™ Mat can last a lifetime. It is made from durable leatherette, which does not break down over time.

All it asks is that you keep it dry and away from water or heavy moisture.

Yes — grounding still works through cotton socks without any problem.

Check that your GroundingWell™ mat is plugged into a grounded outlet and that the cord is firmly attached. Once your bare skin is on the mat, the conductive materials let electrons from the Earth travel through it and into your body.

Yes. Many people put the mat on the mattress or under a fitted sheet and keep skin contact through the night. Overnight use gives you several hours of grounding contact and is commonly recommended.

Yes, as long as it is thin and made of natural fibre such as cotton or linen. Natural fabrics still conduct, while thick or synthetic ones can weaken the grounding effect.

Most grounding mats should go straight into the grounding port of a wall outlet so the earth connection is genuine. Some power strips do not provide true grounding, so it is worth checking the manufacturer's instructions or testing the outlet.

A common recommendation is 30–40 minutes a day standing or sitting on the mat to feel the potential benefits. Longer sessions, or overnight use, are equally fine depending on what you prefer.

Daily sessions usually run from 30 minutes to a few hours, depending on how the mat fits into your routine. Some people keep it under their feet while working at a desk; others leave it in the bed overnight for extended grounding contact.

The conductive surface faces up. That is the side built for skin contact, and it lets electrons from the Earth pass through the mat and into the body.

GroundingWell™ Bedsheet Product Questions

Grounding gives its best results when bare skin touches the grounded GroundingWell product directly.

Some of the Earth's energy can pass through a thin layer if moisture is present, but skin contact is still by far the most effective route — in nature even a fingertip is enough.

We would advise against laying another sheet on top of the grounding sheet, since it can get in the way of conductivity. Our grounding sheets are made to be very comfortable to sleep on, and washing them regularly is what keeps them performing at their best.

You certainly can wear pajamas while you sleep on GroundingWell sheets. Direct skin contact does maximise the benefit, but there is no need to sleep naked on the sheet. Comfortable pajamas or sleepwear are perfectly fine, so long as some part of the body — arms, legs or feet — is touching the sheet.

It is worth saying that uncovered skin resting on the grounding sheet gives more targeted benefit. That can matter if you have particular areas of concern, since the grounding process may work faster in those regions.

For the strongest conductivity, the usual advice is to use the grounding sheet directly on your mattress or bedding with no extra sheet on top. That keeps contact with the grounding material as direct as possible.

In short, what counts is having some area of your body in contact with the grounding sheet while you sleep. Arrange it however feels most comfortable, as long as direct skin contact is there in those spots so you get the benefits of grounding.

GroundingWell sheets contain silver thread, which is naturally antibacterial and resists odour — so they need washing less often than ordinary sheets. Even so, keeping them free of sweat and natural skin oils is what preserves their conductivity.

DO's:

  • Wash the sheets twice a month, or whenever they need it
  • Hand washing is best; machine wash on a gentle cycle if you prefer
  • Cold water only
  • Air dry only — never tumble dry
  • Wait an hour after applying lotions or body oils before touching the sheets.

DON'Ts:

  • Never wash with bleach or fabric softener.
  • Keep away from whitening detergents and oxi-detergents.
  • Avoid detergents that contain oils such as lavender or coconut oil.
  • Skip dryer sheets.
  • Do not put lotions or body oils on your skin right before bed.
  • Do not iron
  • Do not tumble dry

Anything on the list above can damage the silver threads and leave the sheets less effective, or even non-conductive. Stick to these guidelines and your GroundingWell sheets will hold their conductive properties — and their health benefits — for far longer.

Cared for properly, our sheets keep delivering grounding benefits for as long as ordinary cotton bedsheets last. Like any well-kept bedding, their lifespan is comparable, so you can enjoy the benefits over a long stretch of time.

Following the care instructions supplied with the sheets is the key to that longevity. Regular washing and sensible care maintain conductivity and keep them in excellent shape.

With proper use and care you can expect the same durability and comfort you would get from your everyday cotton bedsheets — while staying grounded night after night.

GroundingWell Sheets are crafted from a blend of 95% high-quality cotton and 5% silver. The silver acts as the conductive element that lets the sheet be grounded, while an innovative grid weave carries beneficial free electrons from the Earth straight to your skin.

Comfort matters to us as much as performance. That is why we deliberately weighted the blend towards cotton when developing the sheets — so there is no scratchiness against bare skin and you still get the full benefit of grounding. The result is a sheet you will actually want to use, night after night.

Yes — winter is the ideal season for indoor grounding. Skip the harsh weather outdoors and stay grounded in the comfort of your own home.

The GroundingWell™ Bedsheet measures 60 cm x 265 cm. It lies across your bed and grounds everyone sleeping on it.

That is all you need for the full benefit of grounding overnight.

It is also far lighter and smaller than the GroundingWell™ Fitted Sheet, which makes it the ideal way to stay grounded while travelling (a must!)

The GroundingWell™ Fitted Sheet is for customers who want a full-size fitted grounding bed sheet covering the whole mattress.

Both are made from 95% cotton and 5% silver fibres.
